The Royal Blind Learning Hub is hosting a day for teaching and support staff to learn the skills used in communicating with learners with complex needs and visual impairment using the Canaan Barrie signing system.

This course is suitable for teachers and other professionals involved in teaching children with complex needs and vision impairment. The day will be delivered with contributions from vision impairment teachers as well as speech and language therapists.

This will take place on Tuesday 12th September 2017 at the Royal Blind School campus in Morningside, Edinburgh.

This will take place on Thursday 21st September 2017 at the Royal Blind School campus in Morningside, Edinburgh.

This event will provide presentations on teaching maths and science concepts to pupils who are blind or visually impaired, mainly in secondary education. It will demonstrate a mixture of tactile and adaptation strategies as well as providing advice and support on exam papers.

Teachers at a seminar are clapping and smilingThis seminar is aimed at:

  • Mainstream teachers and support staff who support a blind or partially sighted child in their class.  

The day will cover:

  • Presentations on the impact of vision impairment on children and young people, including the educational challenges that particular conditions bring as well as consideration of social and emotional issues.
  • Practical activities including working with magnifiers, large print and Braille, iPads, mobility issues and adapting materials.

There will be opportunities for follow up activities and professional dialogue online on the Learning Hub website after the event.

This short course will be delivered jointly by the speech and language therapy and occupational therapy team. It will explore communication development/differences in children with autism spectrum disorders (A.S.D) and those with visual impairment.

Strategies for working with children who have both an A.S.D. and a visual impairment will be covered. There will also be an opportunity to share and explore experiences of working with children and young people with sensory issues. This will include practical activities exploring your own sensory preferences.

This course is suitable for those supporting learners with the above needs e.g. teachers, learning support assistants and therapists.

Hand touching a 3D tactile graphic in a bookThe Royal Blind Learning Hub is hosting a day for teaching and support staff to learn the skills of producing tactile illustrations for their early years pupils. This will take place on Thursday 26th October 2017 at the Royal Blind School campus in Morningside, Edinburgh.

The day will include a practical guide to producing early years tactile graphics and illustrations. The day will explore the relationships between real objects and representations, methods of producing tactile graphics and give hands on experience of creating resources for blind and visually impaired pupils.

This workshop is for producing early years tactile resources from object books to simple raised pictures. Book now as places are limited for this free event.

This two day course will involve practical pre braille skills activities and awareness raising of challenges experienced by the tactile learner. It will consider teaching braille from early years to older children with acquired sight loss. The days will also cover traditional approaches to teaching braille and also the braille literacy encouraged by the meaning centred approach.

There will be some consideration of current braille technology and time for discussion of pupil support needs.

This course is suitable for practitioners supporting braille users, especially in mainstream education at any stage of development.
