Introduction

A song signifier can help a child or young person to understand what is happening next. Here at the Royal Blind School we have written song signifiers borrowing the tunes of familiar pop songs.

The words in the songs have been deliberately chosen to ones that are frequently used from an early age. The structure of the songs are simple and repetitive. Key words can be highlighted with sign support. For example, Canaan Barrie on-body signing, or an appropriate sign system for that individual. For children who have vision use Signalong or Makaton.

Where appropriate the song is personalised for the child or young person. For example, their name can be inserted, or the pace of the song can be slowed down to allow for extra processing time.

After each activity sing the generic “Finished” song. We have demonstrated the finished song in the video ‘Story has finished'. Adapt this for whatever the activity is by replacing the word ‘story’.
